Wikinews MCP is a remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. Point your AI assistant at it and the assistant can search an archive of about 20,000 Wikinews articles and read the ones it finds, so its answers come with sources instead of from memory.
| What | Value |
|---|---|
| Server URL | https://wikinews.mcp.miso.ai/mcp |
| Sign-in | OAuth, in the browser, with your email — free, no API key |
| Tools | ask_wikinews (search) and get_wikinews_article (read one result in full) |
Quickstart
The home page has one tab per client with the exact commands or settings — Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Antigravity CLI, ChatGPT and Claude Desktop. The plugin for Claude Code and Antigravity CLI also installs the wikinews-research skill, which teaches the assistant how to search this archive well.
Any other MCP client: follow its own instructions for adding a remote server and use https://wikinews.mcp.miso.ai/mcp as the URL. The client discovers the sign-in flow by itself and opens a browser the first time it connects.
Sign in and sessions
The server uses OAuth, the flow every current MCP client implements: the client registers itself, opens a browser, you sign in with your email, and the client receives a token. Nothing to paste into a config file; the same account works from any client.
- A session lasts up to 30 days, after which the client asks you to sign in again.
- To end a session, remove the server from your client or sign out there. The tokens are held by the client, not by us.
- What the server records when you sign in and use the tools is described on the privacy page.
Tools
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
ask_wikinews |
Search the Wikinews archive — world, politics, science, sport and business reporting. |
get_wikinews_article |
Get the full text of a specific snippet returned by ask_wikinews, using its product_id and offset. |
Your client shows the full argument list for each tool. Results come back as text blocks containing JSON: the search tool returns a list of articles with title, date, URL and a short snippet; the article tool returns the full text of one of them. The wikinews-research skill, and the tool descriptions themselves, ask the assistant to search first, read the full article before quoting, and cite the article title and URL.
Good to know
- Turn on tool approval in your client if it offers it, so you see what the assistant is about to call. The two tools here only read; neither changes anything. As with any MCP server, be careful combining it with servers that can act on your behalf, since article text is untrusted content and could contain prompt-injection attempts.
- Article access follows search. The article tool only returns articles that a search on the same connection surfaced recently (about an hour); arbitrary article identifiers are refused. Search first, then fetch.
- Coverage. Wikinews reporting from 2004 to the present, densest for 2005–2010 and thinner after that. A search that finds nothing is a real answer; the skill tells the assistant to say so rather than guess.
- Rate limit. 500 requests per 60 seconds per client address, enforced at the gateway and reported in
x-ratelimit-limit,x-ratelimit-remainingandx-ratelimit-resetresponse headers. Over the limit you get429. - Licence. Wikinews content is CC BY 2.5; attribute the article when you reuse it. This is a Miso product demonstration, not an official Wikinews service.
Feedback
Problems connecting, a tool that returns something odd, or a request for more: support@askmiso.com. Say which client you use and, for errors, the exact message. More on the contact page.
API keys and sandbox
Two things a developer portal usually has that this one deliberately does not:
- No API keys. Access is per person, through OAuth sign-in in the browser, from whichever client you use. There is nothing to generate, store or rotate, and nothing to leak. If your client cannot do OAuth, it cannot connect to this server.
- No separate sandbox. Both tools only read a fixed archive; no call changes anything, for you or for anyone else. So the production server is safe to try from the first request — sign in and search. The only limits are the rate limit and the article-after-search rule above.
Documentation
- OpenAPI description — the request and response shapes of
POST /mcp, the OAuth 2.1 security scheme, the typed error model and the versioning policy. This is the reference for anyone writing their own client. - MCP server card — name, tools, authentication and icon, in the server-card format agents read.
wikinews-researchskill — how an assistant should use the tools: search first, read before quoting, always cite.- llms.txt — the index of everything on this host.
- Model Context Protocol specification — the protocol itself, including the authorization flow this server implements.
